SEPIIDA

Cuttlefish also known as Cuttles lies in the marine animals containing sepiida order. These species belong to the class of cephalopods. These species can also be categorized in the class of Octopus and squid. These species have a unique shell from the interior. People usually take it as a fish but it’s not fish its molluscs.

Cuttlefish contains large eight arms with W-shaped eye’s. These species have 2 tentacles that furnish it with a denticulated sucker. Using this denticulated suckers they also try to secure their prey. Therefore, their size ranges from around 12 to 25 cm and it is about 25 kg in weight.

Cuttlefish Predator includes sharks, dolphins, fish, and seabirds. Cuttlefish is also among one of the large brains to body size ratio.

History

The history of cuttlefish was a bit difficult to understand in recent times. But a new study on the DNA of squid and cuttlefish shows that it started evolving a hundred years back.

There are hundreds and thousands of such species that are an inhabiting variety of marine habitats. The origin and fossil record of these species specify their history.

Fossil Record

The earliest sepia like cuttlefish fossil is through Cretaceous-period. It is still unclear whether earlier trachyteuthis lies in this class or octopodiformes.

Origin of Cuttlefish

The cuttlefish, squid, and octopus are the generic splitance from their ancestor known as Mesozoic Marine. This was first seen hundred and millions ear ago.

Distinctive Features of Cuttlefish

Common patterns or distinctive features of cuttlefish are chronic and acute. Cuttlefish have large pupils with eight arms and a pair of denticulated suckers.

Another interesting feature is that cuttlefish have the color changing ability. Cuttlefish ability to change color is due to its different types of cells.

Scientists also clarify the concept by mentioning that these cells are sorted as Pigmented chromatophores. These cells are above a layer of iridophores and below leucophores.

Geo-Distribution

These species lies in a wide geographical distribution. Cuttlefish also occurs in East Atlantic ocean and the north-east. It includes the Mediterranean sea as well. Researchers also claim that these species were hard to find in the Baltic Sea.

Morphology

Researchers have compared the behavior and other features of cuttlefish with other animals. Sepiida lay large eggs. The Eggs hatching are the replica of their adults. From the birthday they start showing different complex body patterns.

The Sepiida have a total of 13 body-patterns. Among this 6 of them are chronic whereas 7 of them are acute. Furthermore, these patterns are built from 34 chromatic, 8 postural, 6 textural and 6 locomotor elements.

Sepiida Ecology

The comparative studies show that the cannibalism found in S. Australis was much low. Whereas the relative species may have a little bit of influence on cannibalism. The diet of cephalopods changes with time to time as they grow. Therefore, the reason behind the change in diet is morphological changes.

Food Habits

Sepiida normally eats small crabs, molluscs, fish, shrimp, and worms. Dolphins, seabirds, and sharks are amongst their predator.

Habitat

These species usually inhibit in ocean water. Cuttlefish is a shallow water animal and are known for going around 2000 ft below water. Therefore, Some researcher says that these species are usually in sublittoral depths.

Lifespan of Sepiida

Cuttlefish average life ranges from one to two year. Also, cuttlefish are among one of the intelligent species of invertebrates.

Sepiida Taxonomy

There are five Genera found in 120 species of sepiida.

Sepiida Fun Facts

Every animal or species have their own features and characteristics some of them are quite funny. Sepiida fun facts are shown below in the infographic form.

Amazing Facts About Cuttlefish

Every animal has their own features and facts that make the animal unique among others. Same is the case for Cuttlefish.

Cuttlefish have the ability to change color instantly. Despite all the color of its blood is Green has 3 hearts. Many researchers claim that it sounds like an alien creature. Sepiida belongs to the same family or class as of squid and octopus.

Sepiida is the animal that is considered to be the most intelligent of all invertebrates. Sepiidhasve the ability to see its backward. It uses the same phenomenon as submarines do for jet propulsion. Besides all, it has the ability to shoot a jet of ink.

The 10 amazing factors of Sepiida are as below:

  1. Researchers found that the bones of Sepiida species are filled with gas.
  2. The flesh of the Flamboyant-cuttlefish type is poisonous. This is the only cuttlefish specie having some sort of poison inside.
  3. Another amazing fact about Sepiida is it’s W shaped eyes. Such a unique type of eyes shows the highly developed eyes characteristics of any animal. This allows them to perceive polarization and to shape their eyes accordingly to adjust their focus.

This specie also have proverbial eyes at the back of its head. This helps them to see forward and backward at the same time.

  4. Cuttlefish have the ability to change color within seconds.
  5. This specie can make itself completely invisible. Despite its ability to change colors, they can merge themselves completely with the seafloor.
  6. Cuttlefish shoots the jet of ink.
  7. Cuttlefish or sepiida don’t have any tail.
  8. Sepiida possesses a jet Propulsion which is same as of submarines.

  9. These species blood color is green. The reason behind this is that Sepiida uses protein hemocyanin rather than hemoglobin.

  10. The cuttlefish species have three hearts. They each one is for separate gill whereas one is for the rest of the body.
