(Gr. monos: alone, single; kotylędon: cavity, hollow) A plant of the class Liliidae of the Magnoliopsida that has one seed leaf (cotyledon) in its seeds. Monocotyledonous plants typically have strap-like parallel-veined leaves, and floral parts arranged in multiples of three or six. Examples are cereals, fodder grasses, lilies and orchids. Cf. dicotyledon.
