Shore area between high- and low-water marks; shallow areas along the shore and in estuaries that are alternately exposed and covered by the tides. Applied to shore organisms living between high- and low-water marks. Many juvenile fishes are regularly found in this area. Some amphibious fishes live permanently in this zone, others are occasional visitors.
