Family Colubridae

The family Colubridae, which includes the kingsnakes (Lampropeltis spp. ), is the largest, most widespread, and diverse family of snakes , with few physical characteristics universal among all species. The family contains 70 percent of the known species of snakes, with more than 1700 species worldwide (Pough et al. 1998). Although some colubrids are dangerously venomous , most are harmless to humans. [1]

Habitat

Biome: Terrestrial [2].

Ecology: This species is known from leaf-litter of tropical moist forests and subtropical wet forests. It is found also in shade coffee plantations near forest. It probably does not tolerate much disturbance of its habitat because it requires a thick layer of leaf-litter.[2].

Comment: The lectotype of this taxon is conspecific with the holotype of T. cuesta. Named after Giorgio Jan (1791-1866), Austrian-born botanist and professor in Parma and Milan, Italy.

We follow Campbell (1998) in considering Tantilla cuesta to be a synonym of this species.[2].
