Notes
Name
Status: Accepted Name
.
First described: Day & Rchb.f. In: Gard. Chron. 1869: 78, 1869.
Comment: Year from Eschmeyer[3].
Osteochilus nashii was described
by Day (1869) from Fraserpet River
, at the base
of Coorg hills
, Karnataka,
India as Barbus nashii.
The generic
status of this species has often been debated. In later
years Day (1877) himself consider this species as Scaphiodon
nashii while Hora (1942), and subsequently Talwar and Jhingran
(1991), treated this species as Osteochilus
(Osteochilichthys) nashii. Jayaram (1999) considered this
species as Osteochilichthys nashii
and the species appears as Cyprinion
nashii in Menon (1999). Currently the species is valid
as
Osteochilus nashii.
Menon
(1999) considered another species Osteochilus
godavarensis as a synonym of Osteochilus
nashii without giving any reason and currently this synonymy
is considered as valid. However, the two species are remarkably different
as the former has two pairs of barbels
while the later is completely
devoid of barbels (Talwar and Jhingran 1991, Jayaram 1999) and there
are several other major differences as well (N. Dahanukar pers. obs.).
