Neolissochilus hexagonolepis

Family : Minnows or carps ; Occurs in fast flowing streams and rivers with rocky bottom [1]. Lives mainly in the middle of streams. Omnivorous . Feeds mainly on filamentous green algae, lesser on chironomid larvae, crustaceans and water beetles[2]. Migrate upstream during the breeding season where spawning takes place on stones and gravel [3]. Spawns from April to October with a peak in August to September. Male matures at 9 cm. Flesh is considered delicious and market demand is great.

Habitat

Ecology: Inhabits streams with fast flowing water mostly in high gradient and low gradient riffles and pools (Menon 1991). It prefers rocky and boulder areas with high flow . Siltation caused by deforestation could act as a threat .

The species is known to breed from April to October with a peak in August to September. The male of this species mature at an early size of 9 cm. It breeds in pools with running water .[4].
