Family : Minnows or carps ; Is the largest scale-bearing indigenous fish species in southern Africa . Adults prefer flowing water in deep channels or below rapids , but the species does well in dams. Mainly a predator , initially taking insects and small crustaceans but piscivore above 30 cm FL. Breeds in mid-summer to late summer over gravel beds in running water . May live for 12 or more years[1]. Imported for food in US and Canadian markets[2]

Habitat

Biome: Freshwater [3].

Ecology: Favours deeper pools (deeper than 2 m ) with an abundance of cover in the form of reefs, weed beds and over hanging vegetation. Primarily a predator with fishes above 30 cm being almost exclusively piscivorous . Breeds in summer in riffles. Fecundity is high with large females producing in excess of 60,000 eggs . Slow grower initially attaining 30 cm (Tail Length ) after five years.[3].

Notes

Name Status: Accepted Name .

This species cannot be distinguished from Labeobarbus aeneus with mitochondrial DNA , but seems to be morphologically distinct . However, further work is needed to assess whether hybridization is occurring between these two species.[3].
