First described: Currie, R. P. Gomphus parvidens, a new species of dragonfly from Maryland. Proceedings United States National Museum 53: 223-226, incl. pl. 27-28., 1917.

Transferred from the genus Hylogomphus to Gomphus as the former is now a subgenus .[1].
