Common Names
Common Names in English:
Fluted Elephantear
Description
Habitat
Ecology:
This species inhabits sandy clay
in moderate current
(Heard 1979),
and main river
channels
with moderate currents in substrates ranging
from consolidated sand
and mud
to coarse
, shifting sands (Blalock
et al.
1998). Juveniles
may require sand and silt-free riffles.
Johnson's (1970) records
of Elliptio fraterna from the main
channel of rivers
and tributaries in swift currents over sandy substrates
are probably based on Elliptio mcmichaeli.
Despite
its limited range
, it appears to be tolerant
of moderate siltation
and other low impact
threats
(Butler pers. comm.
2000).[1].

Last scrutiny: 17-Oct-2001
There is some uncertainty regarding the range
and validity of this
species (Brim Box
and Williams 2000). Johnson (1970) did not recognize
E. mcmichaeli and considered it a synonym of E. fraterna.
Based on anatomical differences in the mantle margins
, Fuller (1974)
recognized both species. Brim Box and Williams (2000) agreed with
Fuller (1974) and consider E. fraterna to be a species distinct
from E. mcmichaeli, based on these anatomical differences
as well as zoogeographical patterns
. Records
for E. fraterna
from the Choctawhatchee River
by Johnson (1970) represent this species.
A list of synonyms for this species can be found on The
MUSSEL project web site (Graf and Cummings 2011).[1].
