Overview
Family : Cardinalfishes ; May enter semi-enclosed sea areas; forms schools over rocky bottoms [1]. Nocturnal species (Ref. 7300). Breeding pairs are found from July to September in Japan. Mouth brooding is done by the male[2].

Description
Physical Description
Species Apogon semilineatus
Males are commonly 8 cm (Total Length) in length when caught/marketed, but may be as large as 12 cm (Total Length).
Habitat
May be found at depths of 3 to 100 meters.
Ecology:
This is a nocturnal
species that has a depth range
of 3 to 100 m.
It is typically found within the vicinity of rocky reefs and may
enter semi-enclosed sea
areas. It forms large schools over rocky
substrates (Kuiter and Kozawa 1999).
This species exhibits
diel
horizontal migration between the rocky substrate areas where
they rest during the day, and the sandy substrate areas where they
feed
during the night (Sudo and Azeta 1992).
Breeding
pairs are found in Japan from July to September and mouth brooding
is done by the male.[3].

of similar species. Apogon
semilineatus appears to be restricted
to the northwest Pacific
from Hong Kong to southern Japan in the Ogasawara Islands. Records
from other localities are probably misidentifications
