Habitat

Biome: Freshwater [1].

Ecology: This species is a fast-growing generalist , and is more tolerant of lower dissolved oxygen levels than other native mussel species. It prefers softer substrate, such as sand and silt , that is characteristic of permanently flooded wetlands, lakes and reservoirs . This species prefers low gradient and low elevation rivers , lakes and reservoirs, and often shares habitat with Anodonta californiensis (Schonberg 2009).

The fish host is the coho salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch (Schonberg 2009).[1].

Historically, there has always been much confusion regarding the taxonomic status of this species and other Anodonta of western North America. Isaac Lea (1838) described Anodonta wahlametensis, A. nuttalliana, and A. oregonensis from the same site. However, Call (1884) considered A. nuttalliana to include, as synonyms, A. wahlametensis, A. oregonensis, and A. californiensis. Recent authors (e.g. Clarke 1981, Turgeon et al. 1998, Graf and Cummings 2007), however, have considered A. californiensis, A. nuttalliana, and A. oregonensis to be distinct species. In a phylogenetic analysis of western North American Anodonta using topotypic material , Chong et al. (2008) found three deeply divided lineages : one clade including A. oregonensis and A. kennerlyi, one clade including A. californiensis and A. nuttalliana, and one clade including A. beringiana.

A list of synonyms for this species can be found on The MUSSEL project web site (Graf and Cummings 2011).[1].
