Description
Genus Stemonitis
Sporocarps cylindrical, stipitate , forming tufts. Stalk hollow, consisting of ± longitudinal strands which may be interwoven at the base . Columella rising to the apex or just below. Peridium fugaceous. Capillitium forming an internal network and a clearly differentiated and complete surface net .
Physical Description
Species Stemonitis farrensis
Sporocarps densely clustered, up to 3 mm total height . Sporotheca dark brown, cylindrical, arcuate with obtuse apex, mostly 2 mm long. Peridium fugaceous. Columella stout, black, reaching the apex of the sporotheca as a slender thread or dividing below the apex into 2-3 branches which divide further and merge into the capillitial net above. Capillitium well developed, arising along the length of the columella, the primary branches not very prominent , dark violaceous with paler margins , branched and anastomosed to form a very lax and irregular internal net, the surface net well-developed in the basal region, delicate and fragmentary in the upper part, the meshes small, irregular, 10-50 µm diam. Spore-mass brown. Spores pale , 6-7 µm diam., minutely punctate . Stalk short, stout, mostly 1 mm long, black, shining, cylindrical. Hypothallus confluent , brown, shining silvery.
