Physical Description

Genus Macbrideola:

Sporocarps small, stipitate, globose to ovate. Stalk translucent, hollow (trapped air is often seen in liquid mounts). Columella usually present. Peridium fugaceous or persistent. Capillitium present or absent.

Species Macbrideola scintillans:

Sporocarps scattered, 0.23-0.35 mm tall. Stalk tapered, translucent, hollow, typically yellow at the base and brown above, continuing into the sporotheca as a columella. Sporotheca globose, dark brown, metallic bronze or silvery, 0.1-0.23 mm diam. Peridium thin, shining, translucent, tough. Columella tapered, sometimes forked at the apex, rarely below, strongly attached to the peridium at the apex in forms which lack capillitium. Capillitium typically lacking, except for the usually simple, apical branches of the columella which, however, may be as long as the columella itself in some specimens, or consisting of 3-5 rigid branches arising from the columella apex and below it and then these attached to the peridium at their tips. Spores globose, dull brown, regularly or irregularly warted, 8-9 µm diam. This sp. closely resembles forms of M. declinata that have reduced capillitium.
