Physical Description

Genus Macbrideola:

Sporocarps small, stipitate, globose to ovate. Stalk translucent, hollow (trapped air is often seen in liquid mounts). Columella usually present. Peridium fugaceous or persistent. Capillitium present or absent.

Species Macbrideola cornea:

Sporocarps scattered or grouped, 0.3-2.0 mm tall. Hypothallus discoid, small, red-brown or yellow. Stalk red-brown or sometimes yellow at the base, keratinoid, homogenous, not fibrous, distinctly hollow, tapering upwards and becoming darker, 50-70% of the total height. Sporotheca spherical, 0.05-0.3 mm diam., dark brown. Peridium partly persistent as a collar around the stalk apex. Columella reaching to c. the centre of the sporotheca. Capillitium dark brown, branched dichotomously, usually only 1-3 times, tapered outwards but remaining fairly stout at the periphery. Spore-mass dark brown. Spores lilac-brown or grey-brown, verrucose, 8-9 µm diam.
