Description
Genus Echinostelium
Small stipitate sporocarps , up to 0.5 mm tall. Spore-mass colourless, pale Emoto 1977 The Myxomycetes of Japan Sangyo Tosho, Tokyo.llow, ochre or pink. Capillitium , if present, not dichotomous. Almost all spp. are corticolous .
Physical Description
Species Echinostelium apitectum
Sporocarps (100-)150-300(-350) µm tall. Stalk tapered, c. 15 µm diam. at the base , c. 3 µm diam. at the top, the lower 66% filled with refuse matter and pale ochraceous yellow by TL , the upper third hyaline . Sporotheca white, pale cinnamon or pinkish, (30-)40-60 µm diam. Columella globose , smooth or nearly so, (7-)8-12.5 µm diam., usually slightly larger than the spores, with a rather shallow, thickened, 6-10 µm diam. saucer-shaped base. Spores hyaline or faintly cinnamon, (6-)7-9(-12) µm diam., smooth or very indistinctly roughened, without thickened areolae. Acc. to Pando 1997 'A new Species and a synonymy in Echinostelium (Myxomycetes)' Mycotaxon 64:343-348, this sp. is a synonym of E. apitectum. Based on the type description of E. vanderpoelii, it is retained here as a distinct sp. due to its large saucer-shaped base and lack of a 'true' columella. Some specimens cited in the original description of E. vanderpoelii are E. apitectum.
