Description
Genus Didymium
Sporocarpous or plasmodiocarpous. Peridium a thin membrane with a covering of crystalline lime. The peridial lime may be scattered loosely over the surface or united into a crust. Columella or pseudo-columella usually present. Capillitium lime-free, consisting of branched and anastomosed threads, often with nodular thickenings.
Physical Description
Species Didymium columella-cavum
Sporocarps gregarious , stipitate , erect , 0.5-0.8 mm total height . Sporotheca globose or subglobose, 0.3-0.5(-0.6) mm diam., white or pale grey, with a true columella and usually umbilicate below. Hypothallus discoid , membranous, oehraceous-brown. Stalk 50-65% total height, dark below, ochraceous , holding scattered lime crystals. Peridium with a pale yellow-brown basal plate , ± colourless and with thickened areolae, covered with stellate lime crystals. Dehiscense irregular. Columella pale ochraceous, hollow, filled with air and with lime crystals, reaching to nearly the centre of the sporotheca, subglobose, conical or cylindrical, sometimes with an expanded tip or rarely funnel-shaped. Capillitium profuse, pale brown, flexuose and in part undulate , radiating, branched 1-3 times, lightly attached to the peridium, with a few cross-bars, the tips hyaline . Spore-mass dark brown. Spores pale violet-grey, densely, palely, verruculose , and cluster-warted, (7.5-)8(-9) µm diam.
