Genus Didymium

Sporocarpous or plasmodiocarpous. Peridium a thin membrane with a covering of crystalline lime. The peridial lime may be scattered loosely over the surface or united into a crust. Columella or pseudo-columella usually present. Capillitium lime-free, consisting of branched and anastomosed threads, often with nodular thickenings.

Species Didymium circumscissile

Sporocarps gregarious , crowded or scattered , sessile on a constricted base , globose , obovate or turbinate , occasionally reniform , operculate , 0.07-0.3 mm diam., 0.1-0.3 mm high, whitish, brownish grey or black. Hypothallus thin, membranous, inconspicuous, continuous. Peridium membranous, hyaline to pale translucent brown, persisting as a deep cup , the operculum convex , lightly encrusted with angular lime crystals, the lime occasionally forming a very thin, wrinkled crust, lime crystals occasionally found on the lower portions of the peridium. Dehiscence circumcissile. Capillitium usually lacking, when present consisting of short, rarely branching threads, arising from the thickened base and attached to the inner surface of the peridium and operculum, hyaline. Columella absent, the sporotheca base occasionally thickened. Spore-mass dark brown. Spores violaceous brown, 10-12 µm diam., verruculose . Plasmodium hyaline.
