Genus Didymium

Sporocarpous or plasmodiocarpous. Peridium a thin membrane with a covering of crystalline lime. The peridial lime may be scattered loosely over the surface or united into a crust. Columella or pseudo-columella usually present. Capillitium lime-free, consisting of branched and anastomosed threads, often with nodular thickenings.

Physical Description

Species Didymium canariense

Sporangiate, stalked, total height 1-1.2 mm. Sporotheca globose or slightly flattened, with a deep, narrow umbilicus, white, 0.7-0.9 mm diam. Hypothallus brown, discoid , inconspicuous. Stalk cylindrical or slightly tapered upwards, slightly flattened, up to 0.8 mm high, bright reddish brown above, darker brown below in reflected light, light orange by TL , darker below, without enclosed calcareous material . Peridium translucent , pale rufous , especially on the inner surface, shining, powdered with colourless, stellate crystals, each with 3-5 slender rays , 5-8 µm diam. Dehiscence into irregular lobes which remain attached to the apex of the stalk. Columella thin, discoid, almost as wide as the sporotheca, bright canary yellow when fresh, fading to pale ochraceous, with broken bases of the capillitium remaining. Capillitium of narrow, flexuous threads, hyaline but darker at the base and with irregularly spaced pigmented sectors, occasionally branched dichotomously, with few cross-connections. Spore-mass black. Spores dull brown, globose, 8-9 µm diam., evenly warted. Plasmodium pale brown. On sclerophylous leaf litter , from 6 sites in the Canary Is.
