Description

Genus Didymium

Sporocarpous or plasmodiocarpous. Peridium a thin membrane with a covering of crystalline lime. The peridial lime may be scattered loosely over the surface or united into a crust. Columella or pseudo-columella usually present. Capillitium lime-free, consisting of branched and anastomosed threads, often with nodular thickenings.

Physical Description

Species Didymium bahiense

Plasmodium brown, usually white prior to fruiting. Sporocarps stalked, 0.8-2.0 mm tall. Stalk lime-free, tapered, 50-75% of the total height , ochraceous above and translucent orange-red-brown below by TL . Sporotheca discoid but appearing subglobose due to the stalk forming a deep umbilicus, 0.2-0.7 mm diam., white or pale grey. Peridium thin and colourless or pale yellow, dusted on the outside with stellate lime crystals which are about the same size as the spores, with an ochraceous thickened basal plate on which a white limy pseudocolumella is seated. Dehiscence irregular. Capillitial threads abundant, dichotomous, laxly anastomosed, brown with pale ends and with small dark swellings. Spore-mass dark brown. Spores pale brown to lilac-grey, (9-)10-12(-14.5) µm diam., cluster-warted. A litter feeding sp. Likely to originate in bark culture from germination of spores after a long period during which time the substrate has decayed.

Habitat

Typically found at an altitude of 0 to 4,653 meters (0 to 15,266 feet).Mean = 406.730 meters (1,334.416 feet), Standard Deviation = 553.970 based on 211 observations. Altitude information for each observation from British Oceanographic Data Centre.
