Description
Genus Didymium
Sporocarpous or plasmodiocarpous. Peridium a thin membrane with a covering of crystalline lime. The peridial lime may be scattered loosely over the surface or united into a crust. Columella or pseudo-columella usually present. Capillitium lime-free, consisting of branched and anastomosed threads, often with nodular thickenings.
Physical Description
Species Didymium applanatum
Sporocarps in groups, stalked, white or pale grey, total height 0.5 mm. Sporotheca discoid , with a very wide basal umbilicus and usually with a small depression above, 0.1-0.2 mm high, c. 1 mm diam. Hypothallus hyaline , sometimes with a small amount of white lime. Stalk usually short, rarely up to 1 mm tall, grooved , brittle, white, by TL pale ochraceous, containing lime and small amounts of granular matter. Peridium single, the basal disc pale brown and slightly thicker and somewhat more persistent than the remainder, the upper part thin and colourless, covered on the outside with white lime crystals clustered in ± angular clumps which are larger than the spores. Dehiscence ± circumscissile. Columella absent. Capillitium scanty and hyaline, consisting of filaments arising from the base of the peridium and radiating towards the periphery, the filaments sparcely dichotomous and sparcely connected. Spore-mass dark brown. Spores pale greyish violet, cluster-warted, 8-11 µm diam.
