Genus Didymium

Sporocarpous or plasmodiocarpous. Peridium a thin membrane with a covering of crystalline lime. The peridial lime may be scattered loosely over the surface or united into a crust. Columella or pseudo-columella usually present. Capillitium lime-free, consisting of branched and anastomosed threads, often with nodular thickenings.

Physical Description

Species Didymium angularisporum

Sporocarps gregarious , stalked, 0.7-1 mm total height . Sporotheca depressed-globose, umbilicate below, greyish-white, 0.4-0.5 mm diam., 0.3-0.4 mm tall. Peridium membranous, covered with stellate lime, purplish-brown, with colourless reticulation confined to the upper part. Dehiscence from above. Hypothallus membranous, containing refuse matter, brown at the stalk base , confluent between sporocarps, not calcareous. Stalk tapered upward, ± cylindrical, filled with refuse matter nearly to the apex, brown to dark brown by TL , with many wavy translucent costae, 0.4-0.6 mm high, expanded into a cup at its apex, the apex inserted through the umbilicus into the sporotheca. Columella discoid , containing crystals, dark brown to black, the surface with reticulate ridges , 0.3 mm diam., 0.2 mm wide. Capillitium relatively rigid and thick, almost unbranched except at the extremities which branch dichotomously, hardly anastotnosing, radiating from the columella to the peridium, brown, nearly colourless at the extremities. Spore-mass dark brown. Spores purplish brown, polyhedral, angular, almost smooth , 10.5-11 µm diam.
