Description
Genus Diderma
Sporocarpous, plasmodiocarpous or occasionally pseudo-aethaloid. Peridium with granular lime, typically double , but can be single or triple. In the latter case, crystalline lime may be present in the middle layer. Columella usually conspicuous but sometimes reduced to a thickened base . Capillitium lime-free, consisting of branched and anastomosed threads.
Physical Description
Species Diderma cingulatum
Sporocarps sessile, crowded on a common hypothallus, mostly, prolate and ± angled by mutual pressure , white, 0.3-0.5 mm diam. and 0.3-1.0 mm high. Hypothallus continuous, white, calcareous, the remains of columellae and peridia remain attached to it. Columella reaching almost to the sporotheca apex, usually cylindrical, white, calcareous. Capillitium profuse, the threads slender, flexuose and undulating , dark brown but pale at both ends, with many dichotomous branches and few anastomoses . Peridium double , the two layers closely adhering, the outer layer calcareous, fairly thick, fragile, ± rugose and mealy , the inner layer membranous and colourless. Dehiscence irregular. Spore-mass dark brown. Spores red-brown, subglobose and slightly angular, (7.5-)12-14(-16) µm diam., sometimes with a fine and lax reticulum with meshes that are slightly smaller than the diam. of the spore, and almost completely encircled by a pale line.
Habitat
Typically found at an altitude of 0 to 1,570 meters (0 to 5,151 feet).Mean = 327.050 meters (1,072.999 feet), Standard Deviation = 346.320 based on 42 observations. Altitude information for each observation from British Oceanographic Data Centre.
