Description
Genus Diderma
Sporocarpous, plasmodiocarpous or occasionally pseudo-aethaloid. Peridium with granular lime, typically double , but can be single or triple. In the latter case, crystalline lime may be present in the middle layer. Columella usually conspicuous but sometimes reduced to a thickened base . Capillitium lime-free, consisting of branched and anastomosed threads.
Physical Description
Species Diderma botryosum
Sporocarps crowded in small groups. Sporotheca subglobose on a small base , smooth , white, 0.8-1 mm diam. Hypothallus not evident. Peridium single at least below, the upper part forming a smooth eggshell-like crust, by TL showing a rather thick, pale ochraceous layer filled with lime, united to the margin of a dark, rufous , shiny basal plate which holds only a few lime globules and has a thickened rim and occupying c. 33% of the sporotheca diam. Peridial lime and columella white, 0.5-1 mm diam. Columella subglobose with a bullate surface, usually sessile but sometimes on a short dark stalk , lime filled, rarely absent. Capillitium radiating, rather lax , 0.5-2 µm diam., mostly colourless, but in parts pale purplish grey, branched and anastomosed to form a net with very irregular-sized meshes, often with small meshes in the axils near the ends, attached to the basal plate and columella and to the upper peridium with forked ends. Spore-mass very dark brown. Spores medium dark, purplish brown, 10-11 µm diam., densely, irregularly verruculose or spinulose , the warts or spinules arranged in rows .
