Overview
Interesting Facts
- The cottonwood tree is a fast-growing softwood commonly found in wet soil along riverbanks and lakeshores. It grows up to 80 feet tall, and has a broad, open crown of widely spreading branches. The tree takes its common name from the prodigious amount of fluffy, white cotton-like masses produced for spreading seeds via wind power. Many is the grove of cottonwoods surrounded by "snowdrifts" of cotton many inches deep in springtime. It is for this reason, plus the tree's habit of continually shedding branches and twigs that this tree is considered in many circles a "pest" or "dirty tree" species.

About 100 species: N Africa, Asia, Europe, North America; 71 species (47 endemic) in China, including at least nine hybrids.
The taxonomy of Populus in China, at species level, is at a preliminary stage. To reach an adequate understanding, it is necessary to make direct observations in natural populations of all morphological variations
between individuals, for all species and at all seasonal developmental stages. Moreover, other methods beyond morphological studies need to be applied, especially anatomic and chemotaxonomic analyses.[2]
