Hiroyuki Tanaka was born in Miyazaki, south-eastern Kyushu, Japan in July 1954. He works as a medical doctor, but is a devoted marine fish keeper. His father taught him the beauty of nature, taking him to many beaches to look and touch the many different animals and plants. Seeing the tiny, lovely fishes while beachcombing and snorkeling along the beaches of Miyazaki made an everlasting impression. Later, he learned catching his own fish with hand nets and enjoyed keeping them at home in his aquarium.

Dr. Tanaka is now working on several books, including Guide to the Fairy and Flasher Wrasses genera Cirrhilabrus, Connella, and Paracheinus, and a co-authored book on dottybacks. He is co-author of Angelfishes: A Comprehensive Guide to Pomacanthidae (TMC Publishing, Chorleywood, UK, 2003). In this book, he served as principal author for Centropyge, Chaetodontoplus, Genicanthus, Paracentropyge, and Pygoplites. In addition to this effort, Dr. Tanaka directs his own medical clinic in Japan.
