Libytheinae

(Subfamily)

Overview

Snouts are medium-sized species of the Family Nymphalidae. A small subfamily of only 10 species, snouts reside in temperate and tropical regions, and only one species lives in North America. Adults can be characterized by their perching behavior: they perch head down on twigs or small branches, where they mimic dead leaves. Adult snouts migrate periodically in massive numbers and visit flo wers for nectar. Males have reduced front legs that are not used for walking, and they patrol host plants in search of females. Eggs are laid in sma ll groups on host leaves. Snouts overwinter as adults.[1]
