The Eudyptes ("good diver") contains six living species of penguins collectively known as crested penguins. A Chatham Islands species may have become extinct in the 19th century.

The Chatham Islands form is known only from subfossil bones, but may have gone extinct as late as 1872. It appears to have been a distinct species, with a thin, slim and low bill.
