Abisares

Abisares (or Abhisara; in Greek ?ß?sa???), called Embisarus (Eµß?sa?o?) by Diodorus, was an Indian king beyond the river Hydaspes, whose territory lay in the mountains, sent embassies to Alexander the Great both before and after the conquest of Porus in 326 BC, although inclined to espouse the side of the latter. Althaemenes

In Greek mythology, Althaemenes was a son of Catreus, brother of Apemosyne, Aerope and Clymene. An oracle told Catreus that he would be murdered by one of his children. Althaemenes took Apemosyne and left Crete for Rhodes. There she was raped by Hermes, who had captured her by skinning animals and leaving their slippery hides in her path. When she told Althaemenes, he kicked her with such force that she died. Years later, Catreus sailed the seas searching for his son, the heir to the throne. In the middle of the night, his ship stopped at Rhodes and was mistaken for a pirate ship. Althaemenes and others attacked the 'invaders', and the prophecy came to pass; Catreus died at the hands of his son, from a javelin blow. When the boy discovered the truth, he prayed that the earth would open up and swallow him, which duly happened. [more]

Cranae

Cranae (Ancient Greek transliteration: ????a?) is an island off the coast of Gytheio. According to legend, when Paris of Troy abducted Helen from Sparta they spent their first night in Cranae. When Gytheio became the major port of Sparta Cranae became a resting spot for traders. After the rest of Greece capitulated to the Ottoman Turks only Mani remained free. The beys of Mani fortified Cranae with a Maniot pyrgo called Tzannetakis Tower. After Greece won its independence the island's importance declined. Now Cranae holds Mani's Historical museum and is a place for excursions. [more]
