(Gr. epi: upon, above; gê: earth); Describing seed germination in which the seed leaves (cotyledons) emerge from the ground and function as true leaves. Examples of epigeal germination are seen in sycamore and sunflower. Cf. hypogeal. Syn. epigaeous, epigeous.
