Family Sebastidae

Distribution: Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. The livebearing Sebastes with about 110 species occurs mainly in the North Pacific. Body compressed ; head usually with ridges and spines; gill membranes free from isthmus. Venom gland in dorsal, anal , and pelvic spines.The family Sebastidae belongs to the Class Actinopterygii (ray-finned fishes ) and the Order Scorpaeniformes. It contains 4 genera and 128 species. It may be found in Marine environments and is primarily Marine. Members of this family are not used in the aquarium trade. Reproductively, most members of this family are bearers. The main mode of swimming of adult fish in this family is balistiform. Compared with other fish, the activity level of this family tends to be sluggish. Etymology of this family name : Greek, sebastes = august, admirable , epithet given to the roman emperor Augustus

Physical Description

Species Sebastolobus macrochir

Body color: Bright red-orange to pink; membranes between posterior-most dorsal spines black. Peritoneum color: light. Shape between eyes: concave . Counts: D:XIV-XVI,8-10, Ar:5, P1 :21-23, GR:18-21, LLp:30-34, LLs:35-38, V:27-30

Size/Age/Growth

Maximum length : 14 in (35 cm).

Habitat

Occurs in places with the steepest downthrow and sharp bends of sea bottom often in the places of the slope surrounded by large depths (the steep bottom relief causes vertical turbulent currents that provide the accumulation of food items) (Ref. 26289). Common depth: 82-273 fm (150-500 m ).

Typically found in water with a depth of 0 to -3,130 meters (0 to -10,269 feet).Mean = -756.260 meters (-2,481.168 feet), Standard Deviation = 1,099.580 based on 54 observations. Ocean depth information for each observation from British Oceanographic Data Centre.

Reproduction

Oviparous (Ref. 205). Eggs are extruded in floating gelatinous masses (Ref. 52092).
