Description

Family Sebastidae

Distribution: Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. The livebearing Sebastes with about 110 species occurs mainly in the North Pacific. Body compressed ; head usually with ridges and spines; gill membranes free from isthmus. Venom gland in dorsal, anal , and pelvic spines.The family Sebastidae belongs to the Class Actinopterygii (ray-finned fishes ) and the Order Scorpaeniformes. It contains 4 genera and 128 species. It may be found in Marine environments and is primarily Marine. Members of this family are not used in the aquarium trade. Reproductively, most members of this family are bearers. The main mode of swimming of adult fish in this family is balistiform. Compared with other fish, the activity level of this family tends to be sluggish. Etymology of this family name : Greek, sebastes = august, admirable , epithet given to the roman emperor Augustus

Physical Description

Habitat

Inhabits reefs and rocky shorelines and found in loose congregations hovering above the bottom or resting among caves and crevices (Ref. 27436). Seeks shelter in areas of strong current (Ref. 2850). Common depth: 6-200 fm (10-366 m ). Maximum depth: 200 fm (366 m).

Typically found in water with a depth of 0 to -2,555 meters (0 to -8,383 feet).Mean = -330.750 meters (-1,085.138 feet), Standard Deviation = 945.480 based on 8 observations. Ocean depth information for each observation from British Oceanographic Data Centre.

Similar Species

• Pygmy RF - brownish-red stripe below lateral line, squared blotches at base of dorsal fin; anal rays typically 6 (typically 7 in Puget Sound RF).
• Shortbelly RF - anus about midway between origin of anal fin and pelvic-fin base (immediately in front of anal fin in Puget Sound RF); anal spine 2 shorter than 3.
• Sharpchin RF - dorsal blotches extend below lateral line; symphyseal knob sharp and prominent; strong dark stripes extend posterior to eye.
• Pacific Ocean Perch - symphyseal knob sharp, elongate; head spines weak and count typically differs; anal spine 2 shorter than 3.
