Family Sebastidae

Distribution: Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. The livebearing Sebastes with about 110 species occurs mainly in the North Pacific. Body compressed ; head usually with ridges and spines; gill membranes free from isthmus. Venom gland in dorsal, anal , and pelvic spines.The family Sebastidae belongs to the Class Actinopterygii (ray-finned fishes ) and the Order Scorpaeniformes. It contains 4 genera and 128 species. It may be found in Marine environments and is primarily Marine. Members of this family are not used in the aquarium trade. Reproductively, most members of this family are bearers. The main mode of swimming of adult fish in this family is balistiform. Compared with other fish, the activity level of this family tends to be sluggish. Etymology of this family name : Greek, sebastes = august, admirable , epithet given to the roman emperor Augustus

Physical Description

Species Sebastes auriculatus

Body color: Light brown mottled w/ dark brown; a dark blotch on upper portion of opercle, fins dusky-pink. Peritoneum color: light. Shape between eyes: convex to flat. Counts: D:XIII,12-15, Ar:5-8, P1 :15-19, GR:25-29, LLp:40-50, LLs:45-52, V:26-27

Size/Age/Growth

Maximum length : 22 in (56 cm).

Habitat

A sedentary rockfish found in shallow water and bays (Ref. 2850), among sheltering weed-covered rocks or around pilings (Ref. 27436). Common depth: <55 fm (<100 m ) Maximum depth: 70 fm (128 m).

Typically found in water with a depth of 0 to -2,191 meters (0 to -7,188 feet).Mean = -509.250 meters (-1,670.768 feet), Standard Deviation = 1,121.240 based on 4 observations. Ocean depth information for each observation from British Oceanographic Data Centre.

Reproduction

Viviparous , with planktonic larvae and pelagic juveniles (Ref. 36715).

Behavior

Predators:

Small live specimens make excellent bait for large lingcod (Ref. 27436). Fin spines are sharp and mildly venomous and can cause annoying wounds (Ref. 27436).
