Distribution: Atlantic and Pacific slopes of Middle America in Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras. Gillrakers on anterior arm of first arch 11-23; dorsal fin with 1-3 rudimentary rays and 10-16 principal rays; scales in lateral series 31-39. Fertilization external.The family Profundulidae belongs to the Class Actinopterygii (ray-finned fishes ) and the Order Cyprinodontiformes. It contains 1 genus and 5 species. It may be found in Freshwater environments and is primarily Secondary freshwater. Some members of this family are used in the aquarium trade. The main mode of swimming of adult fish in this family is subcarangiform. This family may be found from 18° n to 14° s and 99° w to 88° e.
