Family Procellariidae

Small- to medium-sized seabirds with a characteristic tubular nasal passage which is used for smell. Most have weak legs , and all are strong fliers.

Physical Description

Adult : Face : Chin: white spot, extending onto face to form a line up behind ear patch Bill: ivory Lower Mandible: black highlighting Upper Mandible: black highlighting on nostrils and top Legs : Foot Color: black.

Habitat

Vegetation: freshwater marshes, pelagic waters • Foraging Strata: Water • Center of Abundance: Lower subtropical: lowlands, lower than 500 m.; subtropics. • Sensitivity to Disturbancet: High

Typically found in water with a depth of 0 to -6,072 meters (0 to -19,921 feet).Mean = -3,361.040 meters (-11,027.034 feet), Standard Deviation = 1,297.970 based on 9,558 observations. Ocean depth information for each observation from British Oceanographic Data Centre.

Ecology: It feeds on cephalopods , crustaceans and fish2. It avoids competition with other seabirds by ranging more widely when searching out food resources , travelling up to 8,000 km on feeding forays in the breeding season13,15. (Ref. 66432)
