Mostly shoots , leaves, roots , stems, flowers, and seeds of aquatic and semi-aquatic plants . Also molluscs , insects, spiders, fish, and other animals.

Behavior

Purple Swamphens flick their short tails repeatedly. In their watery habitat , they use their long toes to spread their weight across lily pads and lotus leaves.
