Physical Description

Species Percina caprodes

Body: Mouth and snout: Mouth subterminal and horizontal with minute teeth on jaws . No barbels . Body patterning, color, and scales : Back and sides brown, tan, or olive with 15-25 thin dark vertical bars of uneven lengths on sides and back (zebra- or tiger-like); belly cream or white. Second dorsal and caudal fins with dusky bars; other fins lightly pigmented , yellowish in life. 71-79 ctenoid lateral scales. Body shape and size: Body fusiform to cylindrical and elongated; round to oval in cross section . Typically 100-125 mm (4-5 in) TL ; maximum about 175 mm (7 in).

Fins: Tail, dorsal and other fins: Square to very slightly forked tail. Dorsal fin with 2 lobes , distinctly separate, the first with 13-15 spines and the second with 14-16 (usually 14) rays. Pelvic fins thoracic. Adipose fin absent. Anal fin with 2 spines and 9-11 (usually 10) rays.

Distinguishing characteristics: The logperch can be distinguished from by its small-to-moderate (not extending beyond the anterior of eye) terminal or subterminal mouth without obvious canine teeth, the presence of one or more enlarged and heavily toothed scales between the pelvic fins, plus usually a row of enlarged toothed scales along the midline in males and a partially naked belly in females. Breeding adults : Similar to non-breeders; males have nearly microscopic tubercles on scales.

Juveniles : Similar to adults.

Habitat

Most common over gravel and sand in medium-sized rivers but can be found almost anywhere from small, fast-flowing rock-bottomed streams to vegetated lakes .

Typically found at an altitude of 0 to 5,360 meters (0 to 17,585 feet).[1]
