Description
Habitat
Biome: Freshwater [1].
Ecology:
The habitat
types
for this species include rivers
and large
creeks
with substrate types of clean sand
, gravel
, and rubble
shoals
(Gilbert 1992, Thompson 1995, Boschung and Mayden 2004). It is likely
that the eggs
are buried in sand/gravel substrates, in a swift current
.
Based on the biology
of several closely related species (logperches),
this species very likely feeds
beneath
substrate objects and engages
in stone-flipping behaviour wherein its pig-like snout is used to
roll objects and expose aquatic
insects, small molluscs
, and other
organisms
. Logperch generally spawn
in gravel areas (W.C. Starnes
2008 pers. comm.
).[1].
