scales between
the pelvic fins, plus usually a row
of enlarged toothed scales along
the midline
in males and a partially naked belly in females. See

: Similar to non-breeders; males have nearly microscopic
tubercles
on scales.
Juveniles
: Similar to adults.
Habitat
Most common over gravel and sand in medium-sized rivers but can be found almost anywhere from small, fast-flowing rock-bottomed streams to vegetated lakes .
Typically found at an altitude of 0 to 5,360 meters (0 to 17,585 feet).[1]
