Family : Filefishes ; Occurs in shallow water down to 50 m depth, over sandy and rocky bottoms , but more commonly in grass beds [1]. Often seen moving head down among seagrass blades [2]. The young are often associated with floating Sargassum[3] Rarely consumed[1].

This very common larval type has a modal count of 30 dorsal and anal fin rays. M. setifer has fewer fin rays; in the range of 27-29 dorsal and anal rays, and M. hispidus has more; in the range of 31-34 dorsal rays and 31-33 anal rays.
