Family Centrarchidae

Distribution: North America. Anal spines at least 3. Pseudobranch small and hidden. Branchiostegal rays 5-7. Separate gill membranes . To about 83 cm maximum length (reported for Micropterus salmoides). Mostly nest builders. Nest building and guarding done by the male. Valued as sports fish and used in physiological and ecological experiments. Introduced into many areas outside native range .The family Centrarchidae belongs to the Class Actinopterygii (ray-finned fishes ) and the Order Perciformes. It contains 8 genera and 27 species. It may be found in Freshwater environments and is primarily Primary freshwater. Some members of this family are used in the aquarium trade. Reproductively, most members of this family are guarders . The main mode of swimming of adult fish in this family is labriform . Compared with other fish, the activity level of this family tends to be normal. Members of this family have been dated back to the lower Eocene epoch of the Tertiary period. This family may be found from 50° n to 25° s and 114° w to 65° e. Etymology of this family name : Greek, kentron = thorn, sting + Greek, archos = anus

Physical Description

Species Micropterus dolomieu

Body: Mouth and snout: Mouth terminal and slightly oblique , with pads of small teeth on the jaws . No barbels . Body patterning, color, and scales : Back dark olive or brown, sides olive or brown, belly cream or white. Sides either a solid color, with dark mottling, or with 9-16 diffuse vertical bars . Fins dusky to darkly pigmented without distinctive markings (but see Juveniles ). 69-80 ctenoid lateral scales. Body shape and size: Body fusiform , somewhat laterally compressed and moderately deep; oval in cross section . Typically 300-450 mm (12-18 in) TL ; maximum in Wisconsin about 575 mm (23 in).

Fins: Tail, dorsal and other fins: Slightly forked or round tail. Dorsal fin with 2 lobes , broadly joined by a membrane , the first usually with 10 spines and the second with 13-15 rays. Pelvic fins thoracic . Adipose fin absent. Anal fin with 3 spines and 10-11 rays.

Breeding adults : Similar to non-breeders; may be darker and more conspicuously marked .

Juveniles: More pronounced bars on sides. Tail fin distinctly marked with a dark spot at base , a yellow-orange cast over most of the tail, and a dark band at the margin (photos).

Size/Age/Growth

May live as long as 26 years in the wild, 11 years in captivity.

Habitat

Inhabits shallow rocky areas of lakes , clear and gravel-bottom runs and flowing pools of rivers , cool flowing streams and reservoirs fed by such streams.

Typically found in water with a depth of -5,095 to 0 meters (-16,716 to 0 feet).[1]

Biome: Fresh water . Demersal .

Diet

Young feed on plankton and immature aquatic insects while adults take in crayfish, fishes , and aquatic and terrestrial insects (Refs. 1998; 44091). Sometime cannibalistic[2].
