Description
Family Centrarchidae
Distribution: North America. Anal spines at least 3. Pseudobranch small and hidden. Branchiostegal rays 5-7. Separate gill membranes . To about 83 cm maximum length (reported for Micropterus salmoides). Mostly nest builders. Nest building and guarding done by the male. Valued as sports fish and used in physiological and ecological experiments. Introduced into many areas outside native range .The family Centrarchidae belongs to the Class Actinopterygii (ray-finned fishes ) and the Order Perciformes. It contains 8 genera and 27 species. It may be found in Freshwater environments and is primarily Primary freshwater. Some members of this family are used in the aquarium trade. Reproductively, most members of this family are guarders . The main mode of swimming of adult fish in this family is labriform . Compared with other fish, the activity level of this family tends to be normal. Members of this family have been dated back to the lower Eocene epoch of the Tertiary period. This family may be found from 50° n to 25° s and 114° w to 65° e. Etymology of this family name : Greek, kentron = thorn, sting + Greek, archos = anus
