Physical Description

Adult : Bill: red.Adult Female: Head : gray Face : Cheeks: cinnamon-brown Bill: red Body: Back: black streaked with white Underparts: cinnamon.Adult Male: Head: white Crown: black line extending down to hind-neck Face: Eye Stripe: black Bill: red Neck: Hindneck: black line extending down from crown Body: Breast: upper black Color: black with white-edged feathers.


Vegetation: rivers, streams • Minimum Elevation: 1,500 meters • Maximum Elevation: 4,300 meters • Foraging Strata: Water • Center of Abundance: Upper montaine: mountains, upper range, above 3,600 m. • Sensitivity to Disturbance: Medium

Typically found at an altitude of 0 to 5,093 meters (0 to 16,709 feet).[1]

Ecology: The species inhabits mountain rivers and streams of fast-flowing, clear waters, situated at anything from over 4,500 m in the high Andes to sea level in the south of its range (del Hoyo et al. 1992). [2].
