Physical Description

Adult Female: Head : dusky brown with two whitish patches Bill: greenish Shape : swollen Neck: Nape: pale whitish patch on nape Body: dusky brown.Adult Male: Head: Ear Tufts: white Face : Forehead: white patch Bill: black, white, red, yellow Neck: Nape: white patch Body: black.

Adult male: Entirely black plumage · White patches on nape and forehead · Colorful bill: white with a red tip and black spot at base · Immature male similar to female

Adult female: Two variably white spots on face · Dark crown · Very dark plumage · Immature females somewhat paler

Size/Age/Growth

About 17 to 21 inches long, with a wingspan of 30 to 36 inches. Adults weigh about 35.2 ounces .

Habitat

Vegetation: freshwater marshes, coastal waters • Sensitivity to Disturbance: High

Typically found at an altitude of 0 to 3,869 meters (0 to 12,694 feet).[1]

Ecology: This species breed on small bodies of fresh water in boreal forests or tundra , wintering at sea in shallow waters of bays , eastuaries and river mouths . It feeds chiefly on molluscs , but also eats crustaceans, worms, echinoderms and, mainly in summer, insects and their larvae and plant material , feeding mostly by diving. Its breeding season begins in May or June, breeding in single pairs or loose groups in shallow depressions poorly lined with grass and some feathers1.
