Description
Family Zoarcidae
Distribution: Arctic to Antarctic . Elongate body. Mouth inferior. Dorsal and anal fins long and continuous with caudal fin. Pelvic fins absent or small and jugular , when present (erectile pelvic fins beneath the eyes in the genus Derepodichthys). With or without scales . Gill membranes attached to isthmus. Vertebrae 58-150. The three species of Zoarces are ovoviviparous; the other zoarcids are oviparous , some showning parental care. Up to 1.1 m maximum length in Macrozoarces americanus.The family Zoarcidae belongs to the Class Actinopterygii (ray-finned fishes ) and the Order Perciformes. It contains 46 genera and 220 species. It may be found in Marine environments and is primarily Marine. Members of this family are not used in the aquarium trade. Reproductively, most members of this family are bearers. The main mode of swimming of adult fish in this family is anguilliform . Compared with other fish, the activity level of this family tends to be sluggish. Etymology of this family name : Greek, zoon = little aninmal + Latin, arcus = arch
Habitat
Found on sandy or muddy bottoms (Ref. 2850).
Typically found in water with a depth of 0 to -4,839 meters (0 to -15,876 feet).Mean = -229.000 meters (-751.312 feet), Standard Deviation = 656.930 based on 112 observations. Ocean depth information for each observation from British Oceanographic Data Centre.
