Habitat

Biome: Freshwater [1].

Ecology: This species is an intermediate host of the schistosome Trichobilharzia spp. in Queensland (Hurley et al. 1995). It is found in several habitat types , both lotic and lentic , including open bays , permanent creeks , and shallow ponds , and exhibits strong seasonal population fluctuations, peaking in the wet season (Hurley et al. 1995). It associates with aquatic plants and macrophytes including Nymphoides indica and Azolla pinnata, and has a fairly high tolerance to pollution and habitat degradation (Haase and Nolte 2008).[1].

Notes

There is some confusion about this species' status, so that taxonomic clarification is recommended (S. Clark pers. comm. 2010). Brown (2001) believes that this species and G. waterhousei might belong to a single species with continuous distribution.[1].
