Family members occur in shelf and slope waters of 0-2,000 m depth and range from about 65°N to 60°S.The family Carapidae belongs to the Class Actinopterygii (ray-finned fishes) and the Order Ophidiiformes. It contains 7 genera and 31 species. It may be found in Marine environments and is primarily Marine. Members of this family are not used in the aquarium trade.
