Habitat

Ecology: The preferred habitat of D. n. nitratoides is the alkaline shrub and annual grassland habitat that formerly covered the floor of much of the valley. Over 95% of its former range has now been modified by the expansion of agriculture and urbanization.

As for other kangaroo rats , this subspecies prefers an arid or semi-arid habitat with good visibility . Regular dust baths are important to keep skin and fur in good condition and also to facilitate territorial scent-marking. Primarily they are nocturnal , spending most of the day in burrow systems and emerging at night to forage on seeds, vegetation and insects. Most kangaroo rats will store a supply of seed within their burrows in case of long periods of drought . They are highly adapted to arid conditions and rarely need to drink water. (Ref. 80932)
