Habitat

Adults found in weed , rock and coral areas; juveniles in shallow tide pools [1]. Usually found at depths of 2 to 50 meters.

Typically found in water with a depth of 0 to -4,277 meters (0 to -14,032 feet).[2]

Ecology: This species inhabits sand and rubble areas adjacent to coral reefs in depths from 2 to 30 m. It maintains harems with a dominant male and several smaller females and is likely a protogynous hermaphrodite, but primarily literature to confirm this could not be found. This species feeds on micro-zoobenthos.[3].

Comment: Labrus formosus Shaw is a reclassification of the species originally named Sparus formosus Shaw & Nodder, 1790, which is a synonym of L. mixtus Linnaeus, 1758; thus, C. formosus (Bennett) is valid and not a homonym .
