Family Stomiidae

Distribution: Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. No true gill rakers in adults ; one infraorbital bone; one or no supramaxillaries; mesopterygoid reduced in size or absent; photophores without ducts or lumen ; mental barbel in most, associated with hyoid apparatus; pectoral fin rays absent in Tactostoma, Idiacanthus, and Photostomias; most are darkish in color.The family Stomiidae belongs to the Class Actinopterygii (ray-finned fishes ) and the Order Stomiiformes. It contains 27 genera and 228 species. It may be found in Marine environments and is primarily Marine. Members of this family are not used in the aquarium trade. Reproductively, most members of this family are nonguarders. The main mode of swimming of adult fish in this family is anguilliform . Etymology of this family name : Greek, stoma = mouth

Habitat

May be found at depths of 250 to 4390 meters.

Typically found in water with a depth of 0 to -6,000 meters (0 to -19,685 feet).[4]

Biome: Saltwater . Bathypelagic.
