This species is known from a single specimen collected near the summit of Cerro Peña Blanca, in the Cordillera Central of central Panama, at an altitude of approximately 1,315 m asl. It might occur more widely (since forested habitat has virtually not been sampled between the Fortuna dam region of western Panama and the type locality of this species), but since this is the highest mountain in the region, and given that many neotropical salamander species are known to have very narrow altitudinal ranges, it is possible that this species has a very restricted extent of occurrence.
