Physical Description

Size/Age/Growth

Males are commonly 47 cm (Total Length) in length when caught/marketed, but may be as large as 89 cm (Total Length).

Habitat

Inhabit continental shelf waters including estuaries, bays and inlets [1]. They enter rivers [2]. Juveniles form school in shallow coastal bays and estuaries; adults move in large schools along shores [2], and can move over reefs in depths just sufficient to cover their bodies[1]. They form large surface aggregations in deep water [1].

Typically found at an altitude of 0 to 1,659 meters (0 to 5,443 feet).[3]

Diet

Feed mainly on fishes but also on pelagic crustaceans, especially krill ( Nyctiphanes australis ). Take also food from the seabed. Fish smaller than 10 cm feed predominantly on copepods [4].
